The excitement for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is building up as the tournament’s dates and host venues have been unveiled. The marquee event is set to take place from June 4 to June 30 and will be jointly hosted in the Caribbean and the USA. As many as 10 venues have been selected to accommodate the tournament, with USA co-hosting for the first time alongside the Caribbean islands.
The 2024 T20 World Cup is anticipated to be a grand affair, featuring 20 teams from across the cricketing world. The format of the tournament will undergo a change from previous editions held in the UAE in 2021 and Australia in 2022. The participating teams will be divided into four groups of five each, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the next stage, known as the Super 8s. In the Super 8s, these teams will be split into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semifinals.
As part of the preparations, the ICC has already inspected some venues in the USA that have been shortlisted to host matches during the T20 World Cup. Among the chosen venues are Lauderhill in Florida, Dallas, Morisville, and New York. Lauderhill has prior experience hosting international matches, while Grand Prairie Stadium (Dallas), Church Street Park (Morrisville), and Van Cortlandt Park (New York) are yet to receive international status.
The final decision on the venues will be made collaboratively by the ICC, Cricket West Indies, and USA Cricket in the coming months. The move to include North America as a host for the prestigious event aims not only to expand the game’s reach in the region but also to bolster cricket’s case for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The ICC, hopeful of cricket’s participation in the LA Games, believes that hosting a major cricketing event in the USA will be a significant step towards achieving this goal. Cricket is one of the nine shortlisted sports for the 2028 Summer Games, alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsport.
