Despite not being a part of India’s initial playing eleven in the tournament’s early matches, the 33-year-old fast bowler has made a resounding impact since his inclusion, amassing a commendable 16 wickets in just four appearances.
Undoubtedly, Shami stands as India’s top wicket-taker in the World Cup, boasting 45 scalps to his name. However, while the nation showers praise on the cricketer, a contrary sentiment arises from Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, who seems unenthused by his remarkable achievements.
In a recent interview, Hasin Jahan, when asked about her sentiments regarding Mohammed Shami’s exceptional performance in the World Cup, took an unexpected stance, claiming a lack of interest in cricket. Her response diverged from the expected support for the star bowler, raising eyebrows.
Jahan, however, found a positive angle to Shami’s success, pointing out how his impressive performance could potentially secure his position in the national team, thus allowing him to earn more, subsequently securing the future of herself and their daughter, Aaira.
She expressed, “Kuch bhi hai, accha perform kar raha hai. Accha khelega toh team main bana rahega. Achha kamayega toh humara bhavishya secure rahega [Whatever it is! He is performing well. If he does well, he will stay in the team. If he earns good, our future will remain secure].”
However, Hasin Jahan notably refrained from extending her best wishes to Mohammed Shami, even as his contributions could prove pivotal to India’s prospects in the home World Cup.
The couple’s relationship, once buoyant, turned acrimonious after Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence, extramarital affairs, and match-fixing in 2019. This led to a legal battle, with an arrest warrant issued against Shami by the Alipore Session Court, a dispute that is yet to reach its final verdict in the Supreme Court.
The controversy undoubtedly cast a shadow on Shami’s career. The cricketer vehemently denied the match-fixing allegations, expressing his unwavering loyalty to his country. Despite attempts to secure custody of his daughter, the efforts were futile.
